The world of superheroes is very varied and full of characters with different characteristics. One of the most popular is Captain America, a figure from Marvel Comics universe created in 1941 by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby who with his characteristic shield represents American patriotism and the fight against evil. In fact, this character named Steve Rogers was created in the middle of the Second World War and since then he has had many appearances and has won the admiration and fervor of many fans, especially for the recent productions in which he has been played by the actor Chris Evans.
His costume made up of the colors of the United States flag is a representation of the most important symbol of the United States. On the torso we see the typical red and white bars as well as a single star, for anyone it is obvious that it is the United States flag, however some curious or observers have noticed that it is similar to the flag of Puerto Rico: Is Captain America Captain Puerto Rico?
Puerto Rico is an island located in the Caribbean, currently it is part of the United States but it is not a state, it is a commonwealth, which means that it remains united with this country, but does not represent a state of it. The flag of Puerto Rico is very similar to that of the United States, but while that of this country has 13 bars and 50 stars, that of Puerto Rico only has 5 bars and 1 star and while the stars of the United States are within a rectangle, the star Puerto Rico is within a triangle. However, Puerto Rico did not base its flag on that of the United States, but its revolutionaries were inspired by the flag of Cuba, which at the end of the 19th century was its partner in the struggle for independence.
Returning to the topic, Captain America’s costume is curiously a representation of the island’s flag, which with its only star and few stripes is similar to its flag. In many forums and websites people have noticed this detail and it has become a joke, many memes can be found about this curiosity, although this joke is not new since in fact in 1971 when the singer Don McLean released his album “American Pie”, many Puerto Rican people laughed at the cover, which actually seemed to represent the island’s flag.
Although the character was created in 1941, the flag of Puerto Rico was not officially adopted until 1952. In reality, it would be very difficult (and unaesthetic) to represent the 50 stars and 13 stripes, so the Captain America costume simplifies its design, giving rise to this curious resemblance.
Captain America continues to be one of the most beloved characters in the superhero universe and with his suit he continues to represent a curious characteristic that more and more people continue to notice. The next time you see this super soldier, remember him as Captain Puerto Rico.
We would love to hear official response about the subject from the Marvel headquarters.
